Let's beat winter | Thame Driving | Blog | Thame, Oxfordshire

With the weather we’ve had this week it’s no wonder I went home and packed away my shorts & t-shirts.

I've felt sorry for the workmen out there on the roads, sweating it out in their high-vis overalls and steaming piles of tarmac.

But also incredibly appreciative.

The new road leading out of Thame past CPM is a lovely surface to drive on.

No more risk of a wheel suddenly disappearing down a pothole!

But as the weather gets wetter and colder the roads are going to be deteriorating.

Potholes will be par for the course.

Apart from reporting them to the relevant authorities (they can’t fix them if they don’t know they’re there!) we just need to take extra care out there on the roads.

It’s a good idea to give your car a set of checks to make sure that it’s ready for the change of season.

Here are a few I’d recommend you start with:

  • Fluid levels
  • Lights (including brake lights)
  • Wiper blades
  • Tyres (pressure and tread depth)

The last one is really important.

Checking your tyre tread depth is easy to do yourself with a 20p coin.

Stick it in the grooves and if you the outer band of the coin disappears, your tyre is good to go (remember to test a few places around the circumference of the tyre).

If it’s visible, you’ll want to get that checked out properly.

Not only is it no longer safe, it could land you with a £2.5k fine and 3 points per tyre if you’re stopped!

We cover all of these checks and a whole lot more in our Vehicle Health Check, so if you’re unsure about any of them just give us a ring and book in.

Best bit is, the VHC is completely free

We’ll let you know what’s good, what’s on the edge and what needs doing, but we won’t carry out any work unless you ask us to.
