Ford S-Max MPV Car Review

The S-Max is quite possibly the most appealing people carrier ever!

It is really good to drive - it feels like a super-sized Focus, so the ride is comfortably firm and yet supple enough to mop up imperfections in the road rather than skipping over them - and yet it is still more practical than many lifestyle estate cars.

But, what’s it like to own?

Features

The S-Max can carry five full-size adults plus two very small children in the third row. But while the S-Max is not as roomy as some other MPVs, it is much more stylish and still quite versatile.

Both rows of seats fold flat into the floor while the middle row reclines and moves back and forth on a set of runners to increase legroom.

There are an astonishing 26 separate cubbyholes to hide all your family’s bits and pieces and the boot, at 854 litres, is huge. With all the seats folded away, you have a 2000-litre load space.

Up front the dashboard is stylish and well built and visibility is excellent.

Safety

Nine airbags, collapsible steering column and retracting pedals that collapse away from the driver to reduce injury in case of impact, Advanced Neck Injury Protection System to help the front passenger avoid whiplash and a rigid steel safety cage plus a range of active safety features

The Ford S-MAX was awarded the maximum 5-starEuro NCAP rating for adult occupant safety - the highest ever rating for a car in this class.

Engine

Top of the range is a punchy five-cylinder engine  delivering 220bhp, 62mph in 7.9secs and 142mph. If you are looking for something a bit more practical for the school run, you can choose from a 143bhp 2.0-litre petrol or a pair of 1.8-litre TDCi and 2.0-litre TDCi diesel units delivering 123bhp and 138bhp respectively. The excellent chassis and steering mean the lower powered variants are still plenty of fun to drive. Our favourite, to give you the best of both worlds, is the 2.0-litre TDCi diesel

Running Costs

The three 2.0 TDCi engines are best value. All three engines have exactly the same economy and emissions figures regardless of power output - 49.5mpg and 152g/km. That means cheap Road Tax and better resale values.
