Vauxhall Astra Car Review

The Vauxhall Astra has been a competent family hatchback for some time and with the updated styling for the Mk5 & Mk6 models it has become more and more popular. The mk5 model was Britain’s second-best selling car in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

So, what’s it like to own?

Features

Astras come in a variety of models and include both sporty options in the ‘VRX’ and high-end comfort with the ‘Elite’ models.
As standard the Astra has power steering, a CD player and alarm, but most are kitted out with curtain airbags, alloy wheels and air conditioning. The top ‘Elite’ models also offer climate control and leather upholstery.

Safety

The Astra comes with a 5 star Euro NCAP crash test rating and the ‘Club’ models upwards come with ABS and curtain airbags.

Engine

Available with petrol and diesel options the Astra can provide a drive that suits your needs whether you have a long daily commute or need to dash about town.

The petrol models include 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 litre options.
Our favourite is the 113bhp 1.6 as this provides best all-round performance.
If you are looking for something with a bit more power there are SRI and VXR sports models which go all the way up to 237bhp 2.0 litre turbo.

There are also 3 diesel options of the Vauxhall Astra from the small but yet surprising capable 89bhp 1.3 to the much large 1.9 which comes with either 118bhp or 148bhp. There is also a mid range 100bhp 1.7 litre version.       

Running Costs

As a nearly new car a second-hand Astra is an excellent choice. Due to its relatively low price the Astra provides a lot of car for your money.

In 2008 Astra launched the ecoFLEX model which has low emissions and great mpg making it very cheap to run.
