The latest model of Astra by Vauxhall has built on the great success of the previous model. With very smooth suspension and almost no road noise the Astra is a comfortable place to be, making it an ideal family hatchback.
Owning the Vauxhall Astra
Features
The ‘Exclusiv’ trim comes with air-con, remote locking, electric front windows, cruise control and remote audio controls for its CD/MP3 player.
Going up through the different trim types you will find that the ‘SRI’ trim also includes alloy wheels and sports suspension. The ‘SE’ trim includes rear electric windows and automatics wipers and lights, with the top of the range ‘Elite’ adding climate control and heated leather seats to the package.
Safety
All models come with stability control to help you avoid getting into trouble, but if the worst did happen, then front, side and curtain airbags along with active head restraints are fitted to protect you and your passengers.
Engine
The mk6 Astra offers similar engine options to the mk5 with petrol, diesel and sport models.
The petrol range offers 3 different 1.4 litre engines producing 86, 99 or 138bhp. There are also 1.6 litre models ranging from 113bhp to a sporty 178bhp.
There are 3 different diesel engines; a 1.3 litre, two 1.7 litre engines producing either 108 or 123bhp and a more punchy 2.0 litre 158bhp engine.
Running Costs
Vauxhall has a good record with reliability so the new Astra should prove dependable.
The different models provide good options if mpg and emissions are a concern with the ecoFLEX 1.3CDTi model being the cheapest to run. It has low emissions (109/B), good mpg, and group 3E insurance.
Great prices are available when buying a nearly new Astra making it a good competitor in the family hatchback market.
